MEDIA RELEASE 1 November 2019

York CBD will once again be transformed with heritage themed Christmas Decorations to be installed throughout the main street this coming festive season.

Council approved new night lighting additions to Avon Terrace at their meeting in September and works have commenced to have all the decorations installed by the start of December.

Shire President Cr Denese Smythe said Council is very excited to see the heritage themed Christmas decorations return and the addition of the night lighting planned for the CBD this year.

Decorations will include:

• Christmas lights and decorations added to the street trees along Avon Terrace

• Up lighting of the trees located in Peace Park

• Up lighting of the Wara Art Sculptures located in the town precinct

• A Tiny Door Christmas trail within the town precinct

• A traditional six metre Community Christmas tree situated in the York Courthouse alcove

• Street banners and images on rubbish bin panels in the main street selected from the Residency Museum heritage Christmas card collection

• Five life size heritage Christmas cards in various locations throughout the town centre

“The focus on night lighting will add to the Christmas experience and enjoyment of both visitors and residents” Shire President Cr Smythe said.

The Council will also run a Best Decorated Business Competition, encouraging local businesses to add decorative interest to their shopfronts or interiors, which includes a perpetual trophy donated by local resident Ron Macey.

“This is a fantastic example of how the Council is now working with the community to make projects like this happen”, Cr Smythe said.

More information on the Best Decorated Business Competition, Wara Art and Tiny Door Christmas Trail can be found on the Shire’s website or by enquiry at the Shire Offices.
