The York Fesitval - Ballardong Cultural Tour : A Clash of Cultures

Saturday 24th September 2022
(Multiple Dates Between Saturday 24th September 2022 & Saturday 8th October 2022)

Learn about the clash of two cultures in York beginning in 1831, from the perspective of Ballardong woman Dr Marion Kickett, born and raised in York. From an early age, Dr Kickett captured the stories of her father George Kickett (Senior) by writing them down. These stories were handed down from generation to generation. For the past 22 years, Marion and Tracey Kickett have researched much of the content of the oral stories. It was important to them both to connect early documentation of their ancestors of York.

Dr Marion Kickett is a Noongar woman from the Ballardong language group. Born in the wheatbelt town of York, Marion spent her early years living on the York Reserve. She completed Year 10 at York District High School and enrolled in Nurses training at Narrogin Regional Hospital. After the death of her father, she came home to York and worked locally at both Northam and York Hospitals. She left York to further her education, completing two bachelor’s degrees, one with Honours. Marion completed her PhD at the University of Western Australia on “Resilience” from an Aboriginal perspective, using an Aboriginal methodology.  Marion strongly believes education is the key to a better future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s and the way forward for all Australians is education.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the beautiful lands on which The York Festival takes place, the Ballardong Noongar people.  We honour and pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging.
